Reiki
Evaluating from the Grid of history
The word
‘Reiki’ is derived from two Japanese words ‘rei’ and ‘ki’
meaning Universal Energy. It is an ancient art of healing
whereby by the practitioner who has reserves of this energy
stored within him releases it into his patients to bring in
the necessary healing. Early in the 19 century a Buddhist
Monk Mikai Usui rediscovered this ancient art. After fasting
for 21 days, he welcomed this energy into himself. In 1930 a
dying American Japanese woman Hawayo Takato returned to
Japan, and there she encountered a Reiki Master who cured
her. She then returned to America as the first woman Reiki
master and in 1970 she toured America with her teachings on
Reiki. In 1978 Barbara Weber Ray from Atlanta became a
teacher of the methods of initiating other Reiki masters.
She founded the ‘Americian Reiki Association ‘ that later
came to be called ‘The Radiance Technique Association
International’ also known as ‘Usui Shiko Ryoho System of
healing. EVALUATING THROUGH THE GRID OF FAITH Its doctrines are based on the belief that the entire universe is composed of energy – including you. Through the art of laying of hands, the Reiki practitioner releases this energy which they term as ‘Smart Energy’. It is called ‘smart energy’ as it intuitively knows precisely where it is most needed in the body of the patient. And so no matter where the practitioner lays his hands, it heads for the affected area independently to cure it. The practitioner has to be initiated into this practice by learning to call upon the powers of certain symbols that have been carved into stone pebbles. There are three levels of initiation. The final initiation being – the art of acquiring the super natural power to bring forth energy from the spiritual realm into the natural realm - and then transmit it effectively for long distance healing. The first level is an open class. The second level is not. At least three months of attendance is required before a potential candidate can graduate to the second class. The candidate is required to conduct self treatments on a regular basis to experience personally stress reduction and deep relaxation. Symbols that represent the secrets of this energy have to be memorised. It follows the mapped out chakra centres of Ayurveda that is rooted in Hinduism to awaken the serpent energy as part of the enlightenment process. Attunement is a necessary process to gain the art of healing through this energy.
EVALUATING THROUGH THE GRID OF SCIENCE It is a science of intuition. Based on the same principles that the Hindu scriptures term ‘Medhanadi’, patients often testify of ‘phantom hands’ or ‘multiple hands’ on various parts of their body aiding the practitioner to bring relief and healing. These experiences cannot be validated scientifically.
Reiki is fast gaining in
popularity for its ‘gentle healing energy’. Reiki
practitioners believing that as we are now living in the
‘age of enlightenment’ have generously released the secrets
of this ancient art, making them freely available to benefit
the public at large. Hospice volunteers are known to release
this energy on dying cancer patients to bring them some form
of relief before death. |
